The Windows "Briefcase" was another one of those things that, when you look back, was actually kind of cool. This was the start of a real revolution, and by virtue of the massive number of Windows users, must have played a big part in boosting the adoption of online services. Windows 95, on the other hand, didn't need you to get a winsock.dll working to surf the net. I played around with getting internet access working on my Windows 3.11 computer, and it wasn't an easy process - it certainly wasn't something most people would want to do. Windows 95 also made getting online very easy.

I've made it sound simple, in fact this was something you would spend a lot of time tweaking to get running, and there were still times you'd end up screaming at your PC in frustration. Windows 95 games could either run natively, in the OS, or you could just spawn a DOS box to play. At the time it was a little bit less than brilliant, and most games stuck with OpenGL, but as time has gone on DirectX has proved to be one of Microsoft's most powerful additions to its operating system. It was no doubt part of the reason that Microsoft was able to build a reputation as a gaming platform that persists to this day. Windows 95 was also significant for gaming. Things like this seem absurd now, but it made a huge difference to how usable Windows-based computers were. You could also give files and folders 255 character names, which was something you could do on MacOS for a long time before. Windows 95 needed a 32-bit processor to run. Technically significant was also the switch to 32-bit support.
This wasn't true in fact, and while DOS played an important part in Windows 95, and was needed to maintain compatibility with older drivers, Windows 95 did most of the heavy lifting. Some people argued too that Windows 95 wasn't really an OS and was actually more of a GUI - Like Windows 3x - that sat over DOS.
